ISLAMABAD, Jan 6 (UrduPoint / Pakistan Point News – 6th Jan, 2019 ) :Director General South Asian Strategic Stability Institute (SASSI) Dr.Maria said on Sunday that drug use was rising alarmingly among the school children in Federal Capital.
Talking to a private news channel, she said the gravity of the issue came to SASSI’s attention when it was studying ‘narco jehad’, a term referred to the practice of selling drugs to fund militancy. Thereafter it conducted a pilot study on 400 students of 44 capital schools.
“The study was held in 2014 and its findings were shared with the Senate in 2016 adding the purpose of study was to create awareness among students and parents and to sensitise the concerned authorities,” she said Responding to a question she said, “the study findings confirmed that 45 to 53 percent students were addicted of heroin, hashish and opium while above 50% girls were addicted of crystal methamphetamine that was a party drug commonly known as ice .
She termed it an alarming situation for parents and concerned authorities adding an institution that fails to maintain a drug-free environment should be faced with a heavy fine and punishment.
Responding to another question regarding to stop this menace she said State must make some strategies for fixing the responsibilities of the concerned departments as it is vital for giving the safety to generation.
She further said government should increase the number of Anti Narcotic Force (ANF) and create a help line for tackling the rising issue.
“Drug awareness pro-grammes should be held in educational institutions while awareness compaings are needed to launch in the educational institutions.
