20.4 Tonnes Ganja, 7.8 Kg Brown Sugar Seized In Odisha During 2017-19

Bhubaneswar: The State Police and Excise Officials have seized more than 7,800 grams of brown sugar and  20,478 kilograms of ganja during raids on different locations across the state between 2017 and 2019.

The figures were presented by the Excise Department Minister Niranjan Pujari in a written reply to a question in the Assembly today. The Minister was replying to a question raised by Jashipur MLA Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia of the BJP.

Pujari’s reply read while raids on locations dealing with contrabands have intensified in the past couple of years, a total of 852 cases have been registered in such cases. As many as 923 persons were arrested by the police and excise sleuths during the same period.

Responding to a part of the question on liquor consumption, Pujari said the State Government is well aware of the ill-effects of liquor. It is an impending issue and the Government intends to ensure that “safe and good quality liquor” is available at “affordable prices” for people who are habituated to the alcohol.

Consumption of alcohol is injurious to health to spread this message the SSEPD Department was sanctioned Rs 2 crore during 2016-17. In the current financial year, the Odisha State Beverages Corporation given Rs 1 lakh to every district for spreading awareness on the deadly effects of alcohol consumption, Pujari added. More
